Artist Statement
After practicing graphic design for over 30 years, relishing the process of choosing the papers and winning design awards, Annie began to make handmade paper. Living in Arizona is living in texture, bright light and fast drying times. It's the perfect environment for creating handmade paper art. Ann utilizes materials from her environment be they re purposed blue jeans, milkweed, iris, bugs and blossoms from her garden. Textures, light, water, process, pattern and chemistry all intrigue Annie. Paper has the dual qualities of strength and fragility. It's also translucent. The process of destruction and resurrection is a constant fascination.
Annie Alexander creates paper art "Tableaux" (24" x 85") to "Big Bertha"
wall hangings (4 feet x 8 feet). Annie also creates installations that exhibit the translucency, strength and beauty of handmade paper.
